Psalm 42:1  As the deer pants for water, so my soul yearns for thee, O Lord.

Bay dogs stopped a mean one!  Hog Hunting, Florida style!

There are few things quite like the excitement and adrenaline rush of hog hunting!  Hogs, unlike deer, turkey and elk, will attack you if given the opportunity and this adds an element not felt when hunting other species.  Our years of experience along with competent guides, gritty dogs, and well-placed feeders equals a fun-filled adventure for the whole family!

Location

The sunny state of Florida is where we conduct our hog hunts.  We are conveniently located 2 hours north of Orlando and Tampa, and just 45 minutes west of Gainesville and Ocala.  The lodge is located in Chiefland, just 20 minutes from the west coast.  This central location and affordable hunt price makes it ideal as a fun activity for families.  Many hunters bring their family along, and many kids have taken either their first animal or their first hog with us.  If other family members do not want to hunt or join in the hunt, we are a short drive from many museums, amusement parks, and beaches.

Hunt Information

We offer two different types of hog hunts, which can be tailor fit to your needs.  We run hunts for trophy boars and meat hogs.  The trophy boars are judged so by their teeth, which are typically somewhere between 1.5 and 2+  inches.  The  weight of a trophy boar can range between 130 - 250, depending on whether or not it is a boar or a barr hog.  (A barr hog has been castrated.)  A meat hog is typically a sow or a barr hog, and can range in weight from 95 - 200 lbs.  The hogs you will be hunting are not feral or wild domesticated hogs, but the descendents of the Spanish hogs brought over by the conquistadors as well as some wild Russian hog descendents.

We have the best success rates when we run dogs, but hunters do have the option for stand hunting or spot-and-stalk.  Typically, hunters stand hunt over feeders in the early morning, then hunt with the dogs for the rest of the day.  We have had success with spot-and-stalk method, but it is a considerably lower percent, especially for trophy boars.  We do not have any high or low fences, everything is free range, so spot-and-stalk is harder.

When we hunt with dogs, there is a guide and a dog handler on horseback.  They will work the dogs through the palmetto thickets and marshes until a track or hot trail is found.  Another guide will ride with the hunters in a truck or swamp buggy/jeep.  They will have radios to communicate during the hunt.  Once the dogs get the hog stopped, which might take several attempts over a couple of miles, depending on the hog, the guide with the dogs will radio the guide that has the hunters.  The hunter and whoever else wants to watch/video, goes with the guide into where the hog is.  The guide with the dogs, usually Brady, will go through specific instructions on when to shoot the hog so that the safety of everyone involved, especially the dogs, will not be comprimised.  Then the rest is up to the hunter!

We do have catch dogs for those hunters who want to use a knife.  The catch dog will charge on the hog stopped by the bay dogs, catch the hog by the ear, and hold tight until commanded to let go.  This allows the hunter, accompanied by a guide, to grab a leg of the hog and throw it.  The hunter can then use the knife in a safe manner without worry of being cut by the hog.

The hunt includes one night of lodging and a day and a half of hunting, as well as five meals.  Local airport pickup from Gainesville is also included.  Hunters flying in to Tampa or Orlando should rent a car, as we are 2.5 hours away.  We can provide pickup from those airports, depending on schedule, but we do charge a travel fee for diesel compensation.  The State of Florida does not require a hunting license or tags to hunt wild hogs as they are considered a nuisance.  We do recommend that all hunters complete a hunter safety course before participating in any hunting activities.  We welcome any non-hunters that would also like to enjoy in the thrill of hog hunting or the other fun activities this area has to offer.  Hunters must provide coolers for transportation of their meat home.  Cleaning, skinning, caping of trophy, and quartering is provided in the hunt.  We also have a taxidermist in Georgia who does exceptional work, and we can arrange transportation of the trophy to the taxidermist if you do not already have one.  Hunters that fly in must make own arrangements for shipping meat home, as we are not responsible for shipping meat.

As we try to accomodate all those who come on a hunting adventure with us, please let us know ahead of time of any food allergies, physical concerns or special needs so we can properly plan and prepare.
