Terrain
This area of
Kansas
is unique in that most of the various habitats across the state are found in the local area. From wooded river bottoms and hardwood forests to steep cedar dotted hillsides and prairie pasture to flat valleys of rich soil, your hunt with
Cross Country Outfitters, LLC will show you the best of what
Kansas
has to offer.
Typical Climate
Kansas
is notorious for drastic changes in weather in a short period of time. It can be rainy and misty and then 4 hours later, be sunny and hot. Temperatures vary in the spring from the upper 70’s to the lower 40’s. The one thing that does seem constant is the wind. With gusts up to 20 to 30 mph, hunting at times can be an interesting experience.
Licenses and Fees
Licenses and tags are not items that are included in the price of your hunt, but can be easily attained over the counter or online. In the state of
Kansas
, any person born on or after July 1, 1957 must show a valid hunter education card before buying any type of hunting license or permit.
The nonresident hunting license is $77.15 for ages 16 and older, and a youth license is $37.15. The nonresident turkey permit is $32.15, with an additional tag costing $22.15. There are other options available for small fees after you bag your bird, including skeet shooting, upland bird hunting, and horseback trail rides. We will be glad to discuss these options with you, given that your bird is harvested early.
Equipment
The best way to combat the unpredictable weather is to bring clothes suitable for both warm and cold weather. It is colder in the mornings and warmer by noon, layering with shirts and a jacket usually work fine. Even though it might be warm, a long sleeve shirt is recommended to reduce the number of bug bites and ticks. Hunting garb should consist of comfortable shoes or boots. Waterproofed clothing items are also recommended, as rain can appear out of nowhere, so at least a waterproof slicker is a good investment. Be careful, however, of the noise level rain gear can sometimes produce.
Any type of camouflage is acceptable, especially those with a combination of green and brown colors, as many of the flora will begin to show their green again. The 3-D or leafy camouflage produced by some camo companies work exceptionally well for turkey hunting, as it adds another level of concealment. Scent-free items, from clothing to sprays, are not crucial since turkeys have very keen eyesight and rely very little on their sense of smell. In
Kansas
, hunter orange is not required during turkey season.
Many hunters prefer to use their own decoys, chairs, blinds, and calls. Please feel free to bring whatever you want on your hunt. If you prefer to call your own birds or hunt solo, let us know; or, you can have a guide call for you.
LED lights, which that emit a blue light, are less noticeable then white light flashlights, and are nice to when walking through deadfall and wooded areas.
Insect repellent is an almost required item to have on hand. Although mosquitoes are not bad, there are quite a few ticks in the woods. Any brand that wards off these critters, especially those that contain permanone, are especially effective. We are planning on providing a pro shop in the near future which would have most of the above mentioned items as well as shirts and hats available for purchase.
Meals
We serve a variety of country gourmet meals, including a hearty breakfast, soup and sandwich for lunch, and four course dinners with dessert. If there are any food allergies, special dietary needs, or preferences, please contact us ahead of time so we can make arrangements.
Animal Processing
Your hunt includes de-breasting of the bird as well as removal of any trophy items, i.e. beard or spurs. We do not provide coolers for transportation of your meat home, but they can be purchased at one of the local stores. We do have a freezer in which to store your bird before you take him home.
For those interested in mounting your bird, we recommend a taxidermist in
Macon, GA
who we have been doing business with for over 12 years. He has a variety of mounts and styles available, including a new breast mount. We will be happy to provide you with his info at the lodge.
