Turkey Season Reviews
Two years ago, we started sending out review letters after each season was completed so everyone that has hunted with us in the past can keep track of what are opportunity and kill percentages are, as well as any information regarding new leases and hunt informatiion. We love touching base with everyone, as most hunters leave as friends. Most of our clientele are repeat customers, which is a good gauge into how we are doing as a company. Take a peek at the past two years of our turkey hunting history.....
2006 Turkey Season Review
Dear
Turkey Hunter,
Thank you for choosing B & J Outfitters this past turkey season for another one of your hunting memories. We had a wonderful year filled with new-found friends, exciting experiences and lots of turkeys!
In
Florida this year had seven turkey hunters with a 100% shot opportunity and a 72% kill ratio. Congratulations to the hunters who took their first time Osceola as well as a congrats to the completion of several Grand and World Slams! We are very happy to be apart of memories like these. We are currently working on leasing several large tracts of private land of untouched turkey paradise, and we hope to be able to offer these next year in addition to our other ground. We will also be able to take more hunters with this additional ground, and we look forward eagerly to what next year will bring.
After Florida, we headed to
Kansas . This year we had a lot of first-time turkey hunters as well as some record setters. The #1 ranked bird shot in
Kansas with a muzzleloader was harvested this year. He weighed in over 26 lbs., with a 10 ¾ in. beard and 1 ½ in. spurs. Some personal records were also set; first Rio Grand, first time bow hunt, first time callers, as well as that first gobbler! That life-long turkey addiction starts there! Several father/son hunts resulted in lifetime memories of that first turkey, witnessed by a father and experienced by a son. In
Kansas , with 23 hunters, we had only 2 guys not get a bird, with a 92% shot opportunity and an 86 % kill ratio.
Several Kansas hunters also did a
Nebraska combo with us. Despite the stormy weather and the toms not wanting to commit to calls, we still had a wonderful season. Many hunters walked of with beautiful Merriams and Merriam hybrids. One father and son combo not only experienced the son’s first tom, but they doubled on a first Merriam at the same time! What an awesome memory! Another hunter killed his first double bearded tom after a hunt that took several setups over several hours. We were at a 100% shot opportunity and an 80 % kill ratio with 10 hunters in
Nebraska . We are hopefully going to be able to offer pure Merriam hunting in
Colorado as well. This new camp has great accommodations and beautiful views. We are still working out the details, but we will keep you posted.
We were sorry not to have the chance to hunt with some hunters that couldn’t make it due to family circumstances. We look forward to hunting with them in the future.
Sharing in these moments is exactly why we do what we do; to serve this generation of hunters and set examples for the next. Thank you for sharing in the 2006 turkey season and we look forward to hunting with you in the future. To those interested in hunting with us next year, due to repeat customers we are already about ¾ booked for next year, so give us a call soon and we’ll lock down your dates. Thank you again, and until we see you again, God Bless and Great Hunting!
2007 Turkey Season Review
Thank you for choosing B & J Outfitters this past turkey season for another one of your hunting memories. We had a wonderful year filled with new-found friends, exciting experiences and lots of turkeys!
Turkey season started off with a bang, literally, this year in Florida. On opening day, nine out of ten hunters were tagged out before 10:00 in the morning! Our hunters harvested a variety of ages, with several four year olds birds with exceptional spurs, especially on the new lease. We had just acquired a 2,500 acre lease in late January that had not been turkey hunted in over twenty years. We booked fifteen hunters for that lease alone, and fourteen of them took home some beautiful birds. There were four birds taken with 1 ½ inch spurs or better, and the longest beard was 12 inches. There were ten hunters booked on our other leases and nine out of ten took home birds. We also had the privilege of using a turn-of-the-century Florida Cracker house for a lodge which had been featured in Better Homes and Gardens twice. Overall, we had a blessed Osceola season. 23 out of 25 hunters went home successful and the other two both had gobbling birds within 30 yards but could not get a clean shot. We were also blessed with an opportunity to provide a Grand Slam hunt for a young man in a wheelchair; he got his Osceola on the first morning. The people from Assisted Outdoor Adventures work with the handicapped to provide hunting and fishing adventures. They hunted with us in Florida, and then went to Kansas for the Rio and Nebraska for the Merriam. Since he tagged out the first day, they decided to go hog hunting with us, a fun inexpensive option other hunters enjoyed as well. He killed a nice boar from the back of a Suzuki Samurai using his bow, which was also captured on film. It was quite an adventure! Congratulations to the hunters who took their first time Osceola as well as a congrats to the completion of several Grand and World Slams! We are very happy to be apart of memories like these. Hopefully we will be able to offer 2,700 more acres, ground we had 2 years ago, for hunting next year as well as continuing our other leases.
After the last Florida hunters left on the 1st, Brady and I packed up the camps and left for Kansas on the 4th of April. Despite the rainy weather, we had 32 out of 33 hunters either killed or had an opportunity for at least one bird, and most harvested their second, despite misses. Once again we started off the season with a group from NWTF, followed by groups of fathers, sons, families and Nebraska combo hunters. We are happy to say we have helped ignite that life-long turkey addiction as several hunters, both young and old, witnessed for the first time that intense anticipation and dramatic triumph that is turkey hunting. With the help of an electric Bad Boy Buggy and assistance from Assisted Outdoor Adventures, we were able to obtain a nice Rio for our handicap hunter and head on to Nebraska with some combo hunters in pursuit of the Merrriams.
There was some terrible weather this year in the Midwest; luckily we only got the outskirts of some of the worst storms. Hunting is more difficult in Nebraska when it rains because some of the ground is accessible by dirt roads only and are un-navigable when wet. The toms were also not wanting to commit to a call, so we had to ambush more. However, we were triumphant! The handicapped young man completed his first and we believe to be the first ever documented Grand Slam for a handicapped hunter! Congratulations to him and the Assisted Outdoor Adventure team for this wonderful achievement. They caught all the footage on tape to use as an inspirational message in rehabilitative situations. We will continue to pray for them and their organization in reaching their goals. Overall, we had 8 Nebraska hunters with 100% shot opportunity and 80% kill ratio. We have also acquired a new lease of 6,000 acres for use next year. We are excited about this opportunity and eagerly await next season.
